IMPORTANCE OF ROCKS AND GEMS OF THE EARTH
Rocks can be termed as solid material that forms part of the earth and can found exposed or beneath the soil. They are found in the crust of the Earth. They are a mixture of many components including minerals. Thus, its composition is not certain since its an indefinite mixture of substances. Some rocks like magma and clay are not solid. Gems are stones that have been cut, polished and improved to become precious and of higher value. They are those minerals which are resistant to chemical weathering. they are also found in stream beds and sand at the beach. Most gems have a higher density compared to other materials. this makes it easier to separate them from the minerals in which they are trapped in the mining process. Both are mostly found below the Earth’s service and are natural resources which are nonrenewable. When they are depleted, natural process take time to replace them. They are not readily available and some parts of the Earth may not have any of them.
Rocks and gems are very essential to the economic, social and technological development. They are usually brought to the surface either through mining or earth processes. Such processes include volcanic actions, folding and large scale uplift which moves the rocks to the surface. Due to their limited availability, they are very expensive and are used in special ways. Due to their high intrinsic value, they are generally accepted and can even be used a s currency. The most highly gems are diamond, gold, sapphire, silver and emerald. Countries which have large deposits of minerals have very stable economies. They can either export them or make products out of them for the purpose of export thereby earning foreign exchange.
We use them to make most of the objects and materials that we use daily. They have many uses ranging from building our houses to making jewellery. For instance, Calcite which is found in limestone is used in the manufacture of cement and asphalt used in the construction of roads. We also use gems in clay to use ceramics , fluorite to make toothpaste, silica to make glass and so forth. Most of the products like salt, graphite in pencils, computer chips, acids and lubricants are all made from rocks and gems. We cant live without them because are very important to our lives as well as to all the economies on Earth.
